The Morrow: A warm cafe interior in California

The Morrow cafe in Lomita, California, with a long counter, wood-toned interior and red accents, designed by KOW NIA.

Brown timber tones, slender chairs and touches of red give The Morrow an immediately familiar warmth. For this cafe in Lomita, California, KOW NIA draws on Mid-century Modern influences to create an interior with several inviting places to pause.

Location: Lomita, California, USA.
Project type: Cafe.
Scope: Interior design and furniture production.
Studio: KOW NIA Design Studio.

A long counter leads into the room, with small tables and open stretches of floor beside it. Sunlight falls across the customer area, catching table edges and changing the depth of the brown surfaces. The palette feels warm without becoming visually heavy.

A counter that connects the room

The service counter is the clearest line in the interior. Its light surface stands against the darker timber tones, giving the preparation area a defined edge and drawing the eye towards the back. Loose seating on the other side keeps the customer area lighter. Several small settings remain part of one legible room.

For cafe interior design, the counter also raises a practical question: how do ordering, waiting and seating fit together? Its position should allow customers to approach comfortably while leaving staff a workable area behind it. KOW NIA begins the floor plan with those everyday movements.

Red accents against a brown background

Red appears in selected surfaces and furniture details. Against the wood tones, it adds energy while preserving the room's warmth. Circular details, straight lines and framed artwork give the walls a rhythm that recalls the visual language of mid-century interiors.

Quieter areas are just as important. The floor, counter and lighter surfaces leave room between the stronger colours. Compact furniture allows the different layers to remain visible. The Morrow offers details to discover without asking every corner to become a feature.
